Diamond 4C’s

A very important aspect when choosing that perfect diamond for an engagement ring or other piece of valued jewellery is the four C’s in a diamond. Knowledge in this area will enable you to get the best value for your money.

The first ‘C’ is for Cut.

diamon

Refers to the shape of the diamond and how well the cut. This determines how light is reflected from the stone. The most popular cuts are:

  • Round Brilliant Cut (round)
  • Princess Cut (square)
  • Emerald Cut (rectangle)
  • Pear
  • Oval
  • Marquise
  • Baguette
  • Heart

Each of these cuts reflect the light differently because of the facets, hence the little cuts in the stone. The more facets the more the stone will shine.

The second ‘C’ is for Colour.

  • Diamonds can range in colour from pure white to slightly tinted yellowish brown to yellow/brown. They can also come in pink and champagne. Diamonds are graded using letters from D – Z in the GIA colour grading system.

    D E F - Colourless
  • G H I J - near colourless
  • K L M - faint yellow
  • N O P Q R - very light yellow
  • S T U V W X Y Z - very light yellow light yellow

Diamonds with a colour ‘D’ are quite rare. As a premium retailer we try to stock the very best value for money. We try to have diamonds between colour E – H.

The third ‘C’ is for Clarity.

The clarity of a diamond depends on the amount of interior or exterior inclusions or imperfections which are commonly referred to as flaws. When a diamond is graded it is viewed under 10X magnification by gemmologists. Minimal imperfections raise the price of the diamond whereas visible inclusions lower the cost. The grades include: - FL / IF Flawless or internally flawless

  • VVS1 / VVS2 Very very small inclusions Require 60x magnification
  • VS1 / VS2 Very small inclusions 30x magnification
  • SI1 / SI2 Small inclusions. Generally need 10x magnification to see any inclusions
  • SI3 / I1 Imperfect. Inclusions visible from naked eye
  • I2 / I3 Imperfect. Drill bit material.

We try to keep our clarity at its highest at all possible, all our stock in store are VVS to SI in clarity.

The final ‘C’ is for Carat Weight.

A diamond is measured in carats which is its carat weight. One carat is divided into 100 points so therefore a diamond of 30 points weighs 0.30 carats. The carat weight is the obvious factor in determining the value of a diamond.

However two diamonds of the same carat weight may differ in value. This is because of there quality, determined by its clarity and colour.

All our staff are knowledgeable in the diamond field and are more than happy to go through this process with you. It is of great importance to us that you leave our store happy and confident with your decision while enabling us to give you the best value for money in your choice.
